Support Participant Support Specialist at Gusto

Handles escalated Tier 2 technical support for 401(k) participants via phone and email, resolving complex issues while collaborating cross-functionally.

Mid Posted about 20 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

About Gusto

At Gusto, we’re on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.

All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

We’re looking for someone who thrives on complexity, leads with empathy, and is energized by solving real problems for real people. In this Tier 2 role, you’ll handle in-depth technical and educational inquiries from 401(k) participants and IRA owners, acting as the go-to resource for escalated issues across email and phone. You’ll also collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Operations, and Legal to surface trends, close gaps, and continuously improve the participant experience.

If you’re naturally curious, calm under pressure, and genuinely motivated by helping people navigate their financial futures, this role is for you.

About the Team:

At Gusto Retirement, customer care isn’t a support function — it’s a competitive advantage. Our Participant Support team is on the front lines of the 401(k) experience, serving as trusted advocates for the employees who depend on us most.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Deliver exceptional Tier 2 support. Serve as the in-depth resource for complex participant inquiries — going above and beyond via phone and email to resolve issues and build lasting trust.
  • Own the participant lifecycle. Be the go-to expert for the full participant experience at Gusto Retirement, with a focus on escalated and sensitive cases.
  • Manage your queue with intention. Balance inbound phone and email support, prioritizing by urgency while consistently hitting quality benchmarks — CSAT, response time, and resolution rate.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally. Partner with Sales, Engineering, Operations, and Legal to troubleshoot complex issues and deliver the best possible outcomes for participants.
  • Identify and surface trends. Spot patterns in participant feedback, flag gaps, and share actionable insights with internal teams to drive product and process improvements.
  • Navigate tools with confidence. Manage multiple platforms simultaneously — Notion, Jira, Salesforce, and Slack — while handling sensitive information with the utmost care.
  • Handle sensitive conversations with care. Bring empathy and active listening to difficult situations, finding paths to resolution that reflect Gusto’s values.
  • Report to the Customer Support Manager.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 2+ years of experience in customer care, customer success, relationship management, or FinTech
  • Experience in Benefits, 401(k), Payroll, or HR Tech is a plus
  • Results-driven with strong phone, listening, and writing skills — you’re a clear, confident communicator across every channel
  • Composure under pressure — you can multitask, reprioritize on the fly, and stay grounded when volume is high or situations are complex
  • Adaptability — you pick up new technologies quickly, assess situations with good judgment, and always look for smarter ways to get things done
  • Creative and analytical problem-solving skills — you dig into issues and find the best path forward even in ambiguous situations
  • Strong prioritization and organization — you manage competing demands without dropping the ball
  • Voice of the customer instincts — you proactively identify feedback patterns and translate them into improvements
  • Technical proficiency — experienced with CX platforms and CRMs such as Salesforce, Jira, Zendesk, or similar tools
  • Drive and ownership — you don’t close a case until the participant is genuinely supported and satisfied
  • BA/BS degree

Our cash compensation range for thisrole is $23.50/hr—26.44/hr in Denver and most locations. Additional locations will vary based on our geographical pay approach. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate location, experience, and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto’s subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

Gusto is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate in hiring or any employment decision based on race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, or other applicable legally protected characteristic. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers millions of websites and other Internet properties for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company.

We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a “normalized” problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If you’re the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, you’ll fit right in.

Available Locations: California or Arizona

*This is a work-from-home 100% remote role, but you should reside in one of the regions.”

What you’ll do as a Senior Customer Engineer SLED

About the Role

Customer Engineer, SLED

At Cloudflare, we are on a mission to help build a better Internet. As the architectural complexity of enterprise solutions scales, we are evolving how we partner with our customers. The Customer Engineer (CE) represents the core driver of our technical go-to-market strategy: a trusted advisor who owns the technical relationship from the initial discovery phase through to long-term adoption and ongoing account expansion.

Sitting within the GTM organization and reporting to the Regional Customer Engineering Leader, this specialized role will focus heavily on our SLED (State, Local, and Education) and Local Government sectors. You will not hand off your customers once an initial agreement is reached. Instead, you will operate as a quota-carrying technologist, utilizing AI-augmented workflows to eliminate administrative toil so you can focus on high-value architectural design and driving measurable business outcomes across the entire public sector customer journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Validation: Partner closely with Account Executives to lead technical discovery, build bespoke architectures, and deliver compelling product demonstrations and Proof of Concepts (PoCs) across Cloudflare’s portfolio (Security, Networking, and Developer Platforms) tailored to public sector procurement and compliance standards.
  • Customer Adoption & Value Realization: Lead and/or provide oversight to technical onboarding and implementation, serving as the primary executive and engineering contact for the customer. You will partner with Account Executives to own discovery, demos, onboarding, technical health, risk, and expansion strategy. You will proactively monitor dynamic customer health scores and telemetry to ensure rapid time-to-value and resolve integration bottlenecks common in municipal and educational IT infrastructures.
  • Commercial Accountability & Expansion: Carry a variable quota tied directly to new business acquisition and/or ongoing account growth. You will be commercially accountable for ensuring deep platform adoption, retaining revenue, and identifying strategic cross-sell and up-sell opportunities based on product usage data. Lead technical Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs) to translate platform capabilities into return on investment for C-level executives.
  • Trusted Advisory: Act as a trusted technical advisor throughout the entire customer lifecycle, maintaining a continuous, deep relationship with key stakeholders from initial onboarding through maturity, renewal, and expansion.
  • AI Orchestration & Workflow Automation: Act as an “AI-Augmented” engineer. Leverage AI agents and internal platforms to automate routine tasks such as RFP/Security Questionnaire responses, sandbox provisioning, and basic telemetry monitoring, reclaiming your time for strategic customer advisory.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Public Sector Expertise: Proven experience working with or selling into SLED, Local Government, or Municipal agencies, with a deep understanding of public sector buying cycles, compliance requirements, and unique government IT constraints.
  • Experience: Experience in a customer-facing technical role, such as Solutions Engineering, Customer Engineering, Sales Engineering, or as a Forward Deployed Engineer (years of experience required will vary based on Associate, Senior, Staff, or Principal leveling).
  • Technical Acumen: Broad technical expertise spanning web security, networking (routing, DNS, DDoS mitigation), cloud infrastructure, and enterprise architecture.
  • Commercial Mindset: Proven track record of operating in a quota-carrying or revenue-aligned environment, with a strong understanding of SaaS metrics, business value translation, and public sector/enterprise sales cycles.
  • Communication: Exceptional presentation and stakeholder management skills, capable of bridging the gap between deep technical implementation details and high-level government C-suite/elected official business strategy.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications (The “Good-to-Haves”)

  • Cloudflare AI Stack Experience: Hands-on experience building, deploying, or architecting solutions using Cloudflare’s developer platform and AI ecosystem, specifically Workers AI, AI Gateway, and Vectorize.

  • Applied AI Knowledge: Experience with prompt engineering, Large Language Model (LLM) orchestration, or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures.

  • Coding/Scripting: Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, or similar languages to write custom integration scripts, API connectors, and edge computing functions.

  • Compensation

Compensation may be adjusted depending on work location.

  • For San Francisco based hires: Estimated annual salary of $231,000-$290,000+ OTE, Base + Commissions
  • Los Angeles based hires: Estimated annual salary of $221,000 - $267,000 OTE, Base + Commissions.

Equity This role is eligible to participate in Cloudflare’s equity plan. Benefits Cloudflare offers a complete package of benefits and programs to support you and your family.  Our benefits programs can help you pay health care expenses, support caregiving, build capital for the future and make life a little easier and fun!  The below is a description of our benefits for employees in the United States, and benefits may vary for employees based outside the U.S. Health & Welfare Benefits

Speaking of growth, Customer Support is also a great way to enter into tech. We coach folks on a wide array of skills that set them up for success in all parts of our business.

Whenever possible, Sprout wants to provide our team with the flexibility to work in the location that makes the most sense for them. Sprout maintains a remote workforce in many places in the United States. However, we are not set up in all states, so please look at the drop-down box in our application to see whether your state is listed. Few roles require an office setting. If your position requires a physical presence in a Sprout office, it will be evident in the job listing and your offer letter.

Our salary ranges reflect the expected earning potential for this role. Individual pay is based on geographic zone, relevant experience, and skills.

Our current hiring range for this role: $68,000 – $85,000 OTE annually. OTE is governed by an incentive plan. It is the sum of a fixed base salary plus incentives at target performance. Incentive compensation will vary based on performance. Offers are made within this range, with opportunities to grow within the broader band based on performance and impact.

We share both our current hiring range and our broader geographic salary bands to provide transparency into our compensation philosophy. This ensures you understand not only your starting potential but also the long-term growth potential available as you progress in your role.

We have two geographic pay zones in the United States:

Zone 1 (New York, California, Washington):  $74,800.00 - $112,200.00 USD annually

Zone 2 (All other US states):  $68,000 - $102,000.00 USD annually

These ranges were determined by a market-based compensation approach; we used data from trusted third-party compensation sources to set equitable, consistent, and competitive ranges. We also evaluate compensation bi-annually, identify any changes in the market and make adjustments to our ranges and existing employee compensation as needed.

About The Role :

This role is fulfilling for those who thrive in dynamic teams that seek to make an impact through their proactive and solution-oriented mindset. Going the extra mile to deliver exceptional service is never an afterthought, as you always put yourself in the customer's shoes. Sometimes, you won't know the correct answer, but you are the kind of person who is always up for the challenge. We can't promise it will be easy, but we can promise it will be time well spent.

Our success in the Benefit Customer Engagement team is driven by the personal responsibility taken on by each of our advocates to drive authentic interactions through phone, email, and chat. Our advocates take pride in finding resolutions to some of the most complex benefit questions from our small business owners. With their passion, insight, and customer advocacy, this team has helped us maintain a high NPS score while serving tens of thousands of businesses.

You'll gain skills and experience working for one of the most exciting payroll and benefits platforms for small businesses. At Gusto, we commit to providing the resources and transparency to breed success through ongoing learning, development, and performance reflection.

About The Team :

The Customer Care team is the linchpin of our world-class customer experience. With their passion, insight, and customer advocacy, this team has helped us maintain a high NPS score while serving tens of thousands of businesses. As a Benefits Care Advocate at Gusto, you will guide our customers to solutions, answering queries via phone and email each day.

Gusto is seeking support experts who thrive in a fast-paced, solutions-based call center environment. You will own each customer experience from start to finish, ensuring exceptional service and accurate resolution. You will guide our customers through our product features and act as their advocate internally to influence our product decisions and roadmap.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • You will own customers' inquiries from start to finish while keeping the customer updated at all times during the resolution process. While you can expect to primarily be on our live inbound phone channel for the entirety of your shift, a Benefit Customer Care Advocate should be prepared to flex onto our email and/or chat channels based on business needs.
  • You will be expected to work a full-time 40-hour/week schedule during our hours of operation.
  • You will meet the quality and productivity standards necessary to meet Gusto’s business standards for superior customer service and performance progression.
  • You will collaborate closely with other advocates and across the company to influence product development.
  • You will deliver exemplary customer service using a “search first” mentality, ensuring comprehensive research of a question is carried out through our various internal resources channels before asking for further support.
  • You will expand your critical thinking skills and knowledge in order to answer progressively more challenging/complex customer inquiries.
  • You will stay up-to-date with new products/features and be able to consistently communicate these updates to customers in a way that ensures an exceptional customer experience.
  • You will be flexible to accommodate annual volume spikes from December through March when we require additional weekend overtime and blackout periods for paid time off to provide the best service possible to our customers during the most critical time of the year for small business owners.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Experience: Minimum 2+ years of experience within the call center, technology, retail, or hospitality space and are seeking a new challenge. At least 1-year experience in a Customer-facing benefits role with a Broker, Carrier, or Benefits provider.Highly preferred, 2 years experience in the Benefit space.
  • Technical Ability—You must feel comfortable working with multiple and perhaps new technologies in a digital-first environment (tools such as Salesforce, Slack, Confluence, and NICE Workstation are often used). You will navigate multiple digital systems and use customer data to inform decisions.
  • Collaborative: A consummate teammate, ready to wear multiple hats, inspire those around you and work collectively while priding yourself in maintaining a professional brand and image.
  • Accountable: A proactive problem solver with incredible critical thinking skills, comfortable with a role heavy in customer interaction. Takes pride in seeing customer interactions through from start to finish.
  • Manages Stress Effectively: You're an autonomous problem solver with a personality that thrives in a dynamic environment. You are not afraid to ask for help when the clock is ticking, but you always check your resources before sending out the call.
  • Reliable: Individuals should take pride in showing up to work not only for themselves but for their customers. You’re proud of your perfect attendance award from grade school!
  • Ethical: You hold true to your values of providing top-tier customer service. You are self-motivated to continuously strive towards improvement to better the success of our team and our customers. Shortcuts should never be taken.
  • Great written and verbal communicator: You are a confident communicator and methodical thinker. You consistently demonstrate exceptional writing and verbal communication skills and are adept at explaining technical concepts to a wide range of audiences. You understand the importance of listening to the customer before delivering service.

At Gusto, we strive to provide rewards that empower employees to achieve their financial and personal goals. We offer competitive compensation packages with a strong emphasis on equity-based compensation (ownership in Gusto). To learn more about Gusto’s compensation philosophy and benefits offerings please view our Total Rewards Approach page.

We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.
